Well, last week (Saturday) our little chihauhau had her first litter of puppies. She only weighs five pounds but managed to carry four puppies...

Birth order/Color/Gender:

1 - Tan and White - Female
2 - Tan and White - Male
3 - Black and Brown - Female
4 - Tan and White - Female

The first is a bit of a runt (only weighs 6.5 ounces to the others 8) but they are all rather healthy.

Honey has had a bit of a rough go though. At first she wanted nothing to do with the pups. This passed in about a day, however, and since then she's been pretty pretective of them any time the cats manage to sneak into her room.

Last night we had to take her to the vet because she began to have some pretty nasty tremors. She had to stay overnight. As it turns out, because she's so small and because she had such a large litter for her size, the pups nursing hasn't allowed her body to replenish the calcium she loses. So, she had a nasty calcium deficiency and she had low white and red blood cell counts.

She's now going to have to be taking an oral injection every day for about two months and the pups are going to have to start nursing from a bottle some of the time. So far only the little boy has accepted this...
